Is Portugal’s Immigration System Becoming More Digital?
A frequent criticism of Portugal’s immigration system is its bureaucracy. However, this criticism often overlooks the significant progress made in recent years.

The Renewals Portal, the Online Family Reunification System, and the Contact Form
In 2025, AIMA launched the Renewals Portal, the Online Family Reunification System, and the Contact Form, allowing certain residence permits to be renewed online and enabling specific types of applications and appointment requests to be submitted through the system.
For thousands of residents, this has meant:
- Fewer trips to AIMA offices;
- Less dependence on in-person appointments;
- Shorter waiting times for simple procedures.
Are There Still Limitations?
Yes.
Not all categories of residence permits can be renewed automatically, and the Contact Form does not yet cover every type of residence application.
It is true that some situations still require in-person appointments. However, the direction chosen by the Portuguese public administration, although gradual and challenging, is clear: greater digitalization and less bureaucracy, with the aim of reducing waiting times and improving the efficiency of public services.
