Opening a bank account in Portugal for individuals and companies
To open a bank account in Portugal, the foreign citizen/Portuguese citizen will need to have, among other documents, the fiscal identification number (NIF), a valid passport, proof of residence, and proof of assets/income.
If you are a foreign citizen, as a rule, you will also need a residence permit in Portugal. In the case of non-resident aliens, it will depend on the specific case.
To open corporate bank accounts, the company must be commercially registered in Portugal and have an active corporate tax identification number (NIPC).
In all cases, the bank account opening process must be in person, and may be done remotely/online/by proxy, depending on the bank’s internal rules.
