Equal Rights Statute
Brazil and Portugal maintain the Porto Seguro Treaty that grants reciprocity of civil and/or political rights, as long as certain legal conditions are met. Requiring equal rights status is very important in the case of Brazilians living in Portugal and Portuguese living in Brazil. In Portugal, for example, once granted, the Brazilian citizen is given a citizen card. This card has no relation to Portuguese nationality, and is issued with the information that the holder is Brazilian, having been recognized with the list of rights and duties provided for in the Statute of Equality.
